What is Phishing?

Phishing is a type of cyber attack where attackers pose as legitimate institutions to lure individuals into providing sensitive data such as personally identifiable information, banking and credit card details, and passwords.

Attackers typically use email, social media, phone calls, or text messages to trick victims into providing information or clicking on malicious links. These attackers create a sense of urgency or curiosity to prompt quick action. For instance, you might get a message claiming your bank account has suspicious activity or that you've won a prize, urging you to click a link or provide information.

How to Protect Yourself

Be wary of unsolicited emails and messages that ask for personal information. Always verify the sender's email address and look for signs of phishing such as grammatical errors, suspicious links, and urgent requests.

Use security software, enable multi-factor authentication, and regularly update your passwords to enhance your security. If you receive a suspicious email or message, report it to your email provider, the organization being impersonated, or a relevant authority like the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
